How Long Do Veneers Last?

Porcelain veneers transform a smile, concealing and fixing cosmetic issues that let the side down when it comes to the front teeth. For any chips, crooked teeth, gaps between teeth and permanent staining, veneers can make those troubles disappear. A dental veneer acts like a thin shell that fits over the front of the tooth and the tip, completely changing the appearance. The veneer sticks to the tooth with a dental adhesive. As is also the case with restorative treatments like crowns and bridges, veneers don’t last forever. While dental materials are more durable as ever, they aren’t as tough as natural enamel. Veneers can crack and break if not looked after with extra care. In general, we tend to say that veneers last between five to ten years on average. They can last much longer but it depends on breakages.

The good news, however, is that once you’ve had veneers done once, it’s very quick to have replacements made. If you had your veneers made in a dental practice that has their own ceramic milling unit, they can craft your veneers on site and fit them within the same day.

What’s involved in having veneers made and fitted?

Before having veneers, we recommend that you speak to a cosmetic dentist for a consultation before going ahead with the treatment. There are many cosmetic dental options when it comes to having a smile makeover. Veneers are a good fix for front teeth that have superficial issues that are easy to touch up. If your teeth are perfectly healthy and in good condition aside from a bit of visible damage, then veneers really can transform your smile into one you can be proud of.

Before having your veneers fitted, your dentist will very likely need to remove some of your tooth in order to accommodate the veneer. The veneer essentially replaces the front surface of your tooth so that needs to be taken away so the treated tooth appears as natural as possible. This also creates a perfect surface for the veneer to bond to with the adhesive.

Once the teeth have been prepared, your dentist will then capture digital scans of the teeth. These 3D images are used to craft the veneers themselves using computer-guided technology for accurate precision. The veneers are then colour-matched to blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth. The veneers are polished off to a high shine and are then ready to be fitted.

At De-ientes Dental, we always make sure that you are 100% satisfied with your veneers before we fit them. If you want any adjustments or changes to the style of your smile, we can change your veneers and make sure that you’re happy with your new smile. We will keep your 3D scans on our records so if you need any replacements, we can quickly make them up and will be ready to fit the new veneers when you arrive for your appointment.

Why is veneer treatment considered ‘permanent’?

As part of the tooth needs to be removed for the veneers to fit onto the tooth, the treatment is permanent. That’s why when patients decide to have veneers, we always make sure that they are well aware that once we go ahead, you will need veneers for as long as your teeth last. The same is the case with crowns and bridges as we have to prepare the tooth for the restoration to fit in place. With veneers, the treatment is purely cosmetic but the effect on your teeth is permanent.

What treatment alternatives are there?

You may wish to look into different treatments before deciding if veneers are for you. At De-ientes Dental, we also offer composite bonding and composite veneers as a different treatment to porcelain veneers. Composite bonding involves using a tooth-coloured resin, the same material used for white fillings. Applied directly to the tooth, the composite is built up in layers, moulding the new shape and surface of the tooth, concealing any defects. We don’t have to remove any of the natural tooth for composite bonding to fix onto the surface. Composite isn’t as durable as porcelain, however.

For any crooked teeth and gaps in your smile, teeth straightening is always an option. We have discreet straightening options so don’t worry about noticeable braces when having adult orthodontics. Invisalign and Spark aligners use clear, removable aligners that are near invisible when worn. They gradually guide your teeth towards a neater, straighter position. Straightening not only promises wonderful results visually but is beneficial for your oral health as a whole. A straight smile is easier to clean as you can floss with ease and you’ll correct any bite issues.
